The idea for this trip started with Jeannie signing up for an early March quilt retreat run by the marvelous quilters of Gees Bend, https://www.soulsgrowndeep.org/gees-bend-quiltmakers. We figured we might as well turn it into a road trip, especially given the late winter/early spring timing; March is not the best of months in New England. The plan includes bike trails, rockets, baseball, historical sites, and hopefully, lots of great biscuits as we make our way south and then finally head home for spring after about 7 weeks on the road.
This will be our first long road trip in the minivan with the tandem inside and the two single bikes (or half bikes as tandem riders like to call them) on the back rack. We’ll also be packing a sewing machine and various other quilting supplies. The packing for this trip won’t be quite as challenging as trying to pack for 2 months in New Zealand but we’ll still need to be fairly efficient as the tandem takes up quite a bit of room.
The quilt retreat runs for 4 days in Canton, MS. On our way there we’ll spend some time in Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama. While Jeannie’s quilting Tom is hoping to get some rides in on the Natchez Trace Parkway and explore the area. We’ll then make our way to Florida and spend quite a bit of time there before heading home through Georgia and the Carolinas.
