So many airplanes!

We went to the Pima Air and Space museum this morning, arriving around 9:30, and there was quite a crowd there already! They have a tram tour of the planes in their lot and a bus tour of the plane boneyard at the Air Force base. We got on a tram tour quickly and booked a spot on the noon boneyard tour. Tram tour a very slow ride around many, many, many airplanes, both military and commercial, with entertaining stories provided. They ranged from huge military cargo plans to little tiny training planes that almost looked like toys and from WWII era to fairly recent.  It was about an hour long so I will admit that I was pretty airplaned out by the end. Here’s some pics of cool planes

Next up was a visit to the B17 in its very own special room with a small but nice exhibit. The letter below is worth a read

We dashed over to the space exhibit hangar as time was getting short before our boneyard tour. It’s a small space exhibit and we were hurrying through. Best part was a volunteer (or maybe employee) that offered to take our picture. He took us to a classroom and snapped this on both of our cameras. We’re on the moon!

Even better  was when he told us about the Saturday classes that they run for kids. I said that I would bring my granddaughter to one when she’s old enough and he gave me his card and said to get in touch and she could come for free. Now that is very sweet.

Back in the main hangar, Tom spotted this one – special for Dave

We hopped on the bus for the boneyard tour and got to see many, many, many, many more airplanes on the Air Force base. Some of the planes are used for spare parts, some are converted to drones and used for pilots to practice shooting them down, and some are just hanging out. I didn’t get any pictures. The bus was very crowded so we had to split up and we were both in aisle seats. Trust me – it’s a lot of airplanes!

On the road for Sedona around 2. Tough drive through cold rain and a nasty backup on the main highway due to an accident. Got to Casita Red Rock after dark and we’re now snuggled in having cheese and crackers and red wine for dinner! The Casita is awesome. Can’t wait to see where we are in daylight. Tomorrow’s weather not great but we will  get our bearings and see how the day goes
