Plan today was to bike out to Point Loma, site of the Cabrillo National Monument and some tidal pools. The begining of the trip is along the bike path that runs along the harbor but getting to and from that path has been a bit of a challenge. We decided to try Market street today and that was quite the adventure when we hit major construction. Sort of went downhill as we tried to detour around it but in the end we managed. That’s the fear part. City riding is scary but you have to just get out there and do it. Here’s a closet door selfie before we left; who would run over a little old lady in a biking skirt? I should have no worries!
The harbor path is crazy crowded with people until you get past all of the big attractions and then it turns very pleasant and goes all the way out the airport. A few scenes from along the way. The gazebo is part of a park dedicated to cancer survivors.
We’re cruising along enjoying the harbor views and then
The path ended aburptly and we need to be on the other side of that water. Only choice was a bridge with some pretty heavy traffic so that what’s we did and it was fine. San Diego drivers are very courteous
We then had to go through a bunch of construction. All was well until we were about 5 miles from Point Loma and then the hills started. And I do mean hills. These pictures don’t do it justice
I could not do it and had to walk up them all – not fun. I bailed when we got to the national cemetery and Tom went on to Point Loma
On the way back I did chat briefly with a young man at the bottom of one of the hills – he said he had to walk up it as well and “no shame”. That made me smile.
Not so sure what happened next as I was just trying to follow the harbor but I ended up at a complete dead end and circled around over and over until I met a guy who said the exact same thing had happened to him and confirmed the complete insanity that google was telling me to do. Once again, the terrifying roads work out just fine but this really shook me up a little
I went along with google and sure enough ended up on the bike path out by the airport. I could easily have returned a rental car if I had one!
Kudos to San Diego for how they treat cyclists. I’ve ridden in some scary places out here but have been so impressed with how cars give you plenty of space and always give you the right of way.
