Pearl takes a spin out to Cape Elizabeth

We drove to Bug Light park to start our ride. We learned on the firetruck tour yesterday that it’s called Bug Light because it is “cute as a bug”. See what you think. I have to agree

Nice sculpture in the park

The ride started on the GreenBelt bikeway and stayed on the path for several miles as we travelled out of the fairly busy South Portland area. Nice view of Portland from the path

We were excited to see this East Coast Greenway display. Maine has been very supportive of the ECG

Still on the path, we encountered this recreation area with a nice playground for young children. Saw a couple there that had brought their 2 young kids out on tagalongs

We saw plenty of these signposts. Cycling mecca!
We left the Greenbelt after about 5 miles. The roads generally had decent shoulders and although they were sometimes quite busy, drivers were courteous. Here’s a couple of scenery shots

We stopped here hoping for something light for lunch, but sadly had to settle for a shared strawberry shortcake sundae.
The ride took us out to several points on the water and we also overruled the cue sheet to toss in a couple of our own. Don’t remember the name of this one but I do remember the delightfully cool breeze blowing there

By the time we detoured out to Portland Head Light, at least one of us was getting pretty famished and was delighted to hear from the patriarchy tour guide that the Lobster Shack was right there! Woo hoo! Unfortunately the line for the lobster shack was about a mile long in the blazing sun so as much as I wanted a lobster roll I didn’t want it bad enough to do that. At least we finally saw another light house

Guide says this is the second oldest light house in the country. Of course Boston has the oldest. We made our way back to cute little Bug Light clocking in at 31.8 miles. We were pretty hungry and caffeine deprived so we headed for a coffee shop that we’d seen down the street from the B&B, Tandem coffee and bakery
Now, first let’s recall a clause in the Patriarchy Tour contract. It did say something like “the driver has never had any complaints about his driving and expects it to stay that way”…. second, I will repeat that we were tired and hungry. There was a minor incident with a nice Maine truck trying to pull out of a parking space and his assumption that an approaching car would slow down and let him go. Little does he know what hangry Massachusetts drivers are like! Some words were exchanged between me and the tour guide. The  guide did get very defensive and grumpy but that was short lived and at this point I am willing to maintain his current 5 star rating and forget the whole thing. The less said about the coffee and snack at Tandem Coffee, the better. Doesn’t matter. We are looking forward to a nice dinner at Vinland tonight.
