Had blueberry pancakes for breakfast Wed morning with PEC local blueberries. Very yummy, but that and the omnipresent humidity made us a bit sluggish and possibly a bit stupid. We decided to take our 2 Willies (our single bikes) and explore one of the roads to nowhere on the BBC map. The one we picked, Salmon Point, looked like a fairly short ride from the campground although the map doesn’t really show much for detail on mileage. We packed up 2 bananas and 2 of our homemade energy bars but didn’t bother with anything sensible like lunch having a vague plan to come back to the campground for lunch and go explore one of the beaches. We rode the woodlands trail from the campground to the main gate and in a few more miles we were at Salmon Point Rd. Another delightful ride with great scenery and very few cars
We pulled up at the end of the road anticipating a killer view and here’s what we saw
No fair! Fortunately there was a tiny little opening in the brush where we could peep at the view
So by now we are feeling really good because this sort of riding is just a joy – great scenery, low traffic, flat and easy! We decided to ride back to the main road and carry on to the next road to nowhere. Still vague on mileage we continue to enjoy the scenery such as this group of very hungry sheep
Love the way the little guys carved out their on space on that bale. Right around the corner from the sheep there was a machine wrapping hay bales
At some point we start thinking about food and realizing that we’re pretty much in the middle of nowhere and are no longer doing a quick ride. Tom spotted a sign for a winery a mile down a side road so we headed there but discovered that they were very small and didn’t have anything to eat. I’m glad we were smart enough to not do any tasting! Retraced our path and headed for the next option, a honey and herb farm – not real promising, but all we had.
We ended up with a most delightful snack here; fantastic scones with a local chevre that they had mixed with honey and herbs. That was a great break and great fuel but we were about 20 miles into the ride and it was hot and humid (PEC has no shade!) so we decided to start making our way back. This was a very welcome stop along the way
We pulled back into the campground around 5 and sure did not have any energy left to go beach exploring or, once again, to cook dinner. After a shower we lit the camp fire and eventually had a dinner with remaining chevre and bread and crackers and tomatoes and cucumbers. We learned the hard way that you have to get back in the tent by sundown because PEC grows some real nasty biting bugs and they just laughed at our many repellent attempts!
