Lazy morning, lunch at local organic food store, and then we were off to meet the group at 3 for a get acquainted ride. The start was a tad stressful as it went through town and headed out on a very busy road that squeezed us between parked cars and what seemed an unreasonable number of big trucks. That was followed by delightfully scenic backroads including a section through a neighborhood of gorgeous houses. We later learned that the houses were built by families that came here for the tuberculosis cure center. Robert Louis Stevenson was a patient! The ride also went around Moody Pond which earned an A+ for scenic!
Sadly, the scenic bit ended and we returned to town and headed out on the main road which is very heavily travelled, but with a generally decent shoulder. Our destination was an ice cream stop so we at least had some decent motivation. The ride turned off the main road for a bit and we entered another scenic area that passed by the rather lovely Adirondak Correctional facility as well as the federal Ray Brook Correctional Institute which was set back in the woods. We pedalled fast as we are ever unsure of our status with the feds!
The ice cream stop was delicious and we enjoyed chatting with the other teams and with the organizers. Back down the busy road to the hotel and showering up for social event tonight. 15 miles and 975 feet of climbing. Pretty easy ride so tomorrow we’ll be taking it up a couple of notches.
