Two Thumbs up San Diego!

We took the number 7 bus to Balboa Park this morning and just got back at 9:15! The park includes a number of gardens and a collection of museums in gorgeous buildings, many of which were built for the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. It is also home to the San Diego Zoo. The park is just gorgeous and I still can’t believe that we’re outdoors with no coats enjoying the sunshine in February

We started with a stroll through the cactus garden

We went to the museum of photographic art which, unfortunately, was under renovation. The only part open was an exhibit of Hendrik Kerstens’ pictures of his daughter. Incredibly good! Really wish the whole museum had been open but maybe that’s our excuse for coming back to San Diego!

Brief pause for a coffee in the sun from David’s coffee cart.

Next up was the Mingei International Museum which exhibits hand crafts from around the world from all time periods. Their special exhibit was a collection of black dolls that was just fabulous. Here’s a sample from that collection and of the other art. Spent quite a bit of time there – it was great

We had a quick lunch and encountered the Globe theatre as we were strolling around. Decided to get tickets for the performance tonight and just stay in the park until it started at 7.

Went to the Museum of Man which had a special exhibit on beer history. Wish Dave could have been there!

Loved the growler collection! They also had a great exhibit of monsters targetted at kids. Very well done including a dream catcher where they could leave everything they were afraid of. I liked this monster
Time for anotherr coffee and then we caught a short movie at the IMAX that was nothing special but a good opportunity to rest our tired feet. Quick dinner then the play which was quite funny. Had to wait a bit for the number 7 but we were entertained by a couple a bit down the street – he seemed to be modelling some unique and very effective lighting on his bike jacket while she took video of him riding up and down the street. Wonder if it was a kickstarter?
San Diego really is an amazing city! Tomorrow we’re biking to Point Loma so early to bed!
